Undergraduate Years

Undergraduate Years

During my undergraduate years at University College Cork, I was elected Class Representative and also Chairperson of the University Dental Society. I was awarded a Health Research Board grant to complete research examining enamel micro-struture - and presented my findings at the world IADR meeting in Florida, USA in 1997. I won the All-Ireland Crest Undergraduate Research Award for that paper.

General Dental Practice 2000-2010 and beyond

Working initially in the Nottingham, United Kingdom (1997-1999) I practiced general dentistry within the National Health Service (NHS) system.

On returning to Ireland, I was initially appointed Senior Anatomy Demonstrator at UCC (1999-2000) - while practicing locally in Cork City - as I prepared a dental surgery to open in late 2000.

I practiced in Newport, Co. Tipperary from 2000 to 2010 - providing general dental service for all age groups and cohorts. These 10 years also included a term as North Munster President of the Irish Dental Association, Council Member of IDA and Negotiator for IDA in the DTSS Review (2006).

I was also appointed 1 of 20 National Examining Dentists in the one-year pilot scheme for DTSS probity (2007).

In 2012, I stepped away from full time day-to-day general practice to pursue my post-graduate education - having been appointed National Clinical Director of the first ever Corporate Dental Company in the Republic of Ireland, (Smiles) - serving in that capacity until 2015. I was appointed to a similar role (Group Clinical Advisor) also for Dental Care Ireland from 2016- 2020.

I continue a clinical role with the Resident Oral Surgeon at Bon Secours, Limerick (Barrington’s Hospital) - and balance continuing lecturing, research and study at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

I advise Portman Dentex (Ireland) as their National Group Clinical Advisor currently (2021 - present).

Post Graduate Study

Academic Researcher

Following on from the successful award of Masters Degree (in Healthcare Management at RCSI), I am currently undertaking research examining the use of non-verbal communication in the dental surgery setting.

This research is part of doctoral studies leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

My studies are based at the School of Population Health - at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

I am a scholar on the SPHeRE Programme - Structured Population health, Policy and Health-services Research Education.
